I love the concept of Shadowing days

A career in the ICT sector has no limits anymore. Your job can range from traditional engineering or programming to designing new types of interfaces, project management, animation, mobile games, technical writing, quality assurance – in fact, anything and everything. Information and Communication Technologies are used in many facets of our lives.

Many of us have been talking about the fact that more women are needed in the tech sector. We have written about it, lectured at Universities, in one-to-one sessions, on television or radio shows but have we actually done anything specific to make it happen? Not really! Talk is cheap. There is need for action.

Well Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media, decided to do something rather than just talk about it. Together with several leading technology companies, the Commission organised a series of “shadowing days” to show young women that technology is not at all “strictly for geeks!”.

Viviane explains the concept in this video:

So what are shadowing days exactly? Well apparently successful women in ICT companies encourage young college girls to spend a few days “shadowing” them as they go about their work. This shows the young girls how interesting and multi-faceted technology careers can be.

“Getting more women into ICT careers would be a force for change and a major boost for this key economic sector in Europe”, says Viviane. Hey Viviane it would be a force for change in Pakistan too! 🙂

I think we should think about launching the ‘shadowing days’ concept in P@SHA companies. What do you think?

Should we be thinking of changing our lifestyle? What if someone steals my idea?

    Great Idea!! 🙂
This will encourage more girls to join tech companies.

I think you should be the first one to let other girls be with you. 🙂

Love the idea. But don’t leave out the women who left colleges and universities without an inkling of what they were going to do with their BAs and MAs, people like moi. 😀

I’ll be your shadow and I won’t even do a Peter Pan on you. Actually, quite the opposite. I’ll be the one stitching myself firmly to your soles. Like the idea?! 😉
