Ads are driving me insane!

Am I the only one in this country who is finding it irritating to watch/listen to the current spate of advertising being run on television and radio?

Have any of you heard the Zong advert that was running last month which I personally found sexist and distasteful to an extreme? you know the one in which some young men are sitting around discussing the qualities they would prefer in a woman – all in one package? God that irritated me beyond belief! Did someone actually think it was clever?

Then there is the HBL ad with the Pakistani version of “Mr. Bean”. Does the bank really believe that someone will open an account in HBL as a result of his antics in this ad? Or is it just recall that they are aiming for, not call to action. Come on guys! Don’t forget the end goal!

Public service advertising is no better – have you heard the polio awareness ad in which Shahid Afridi asks if you want to gift your son a set of crutches or a cricket bat? I guess it is supposed to shock parents into getting their children the polio drops but somehow it doesn’t resonate with me on two levels – first of all the same message could have been delivered in a less crude fashion and secondly it appears to say that only the boy child needs to be protected from polio. The general idea of having someone of Afridi’s profile tell people to get polio vaccination for their kids is a good one but it needed to be scripted better.

And if it isn’t the quality of advertising, it is the frequency. Why do advertisers or their ad agencies believe that I want to watch or listen to the same ad several times in the space of a couple of minutes in succession. If anything, it puts me off the product that is being sold or irritates me into turning off the radio or television channel.

They are shoving more and more advertising down our throats, and the other day, right in the middle of my online bank statement (no, not off to the side of the screen!) right ON the statement…there was an ad!

Pretty soon, when you sit on a toilet, and hand will come up, and pinch your butt, and then hand you a printed advertisement for something! It is INSANE what is going on in this world! So, let’s start a club, my friend!

The sad thing is, if a little business person or entrepreneur writes an article or BLOG and it is ever-so-slightly “sales pitchy” it gets considered spam, and they may even delete your account! Sounds like the gestapo to me!

Thanks Jehanara, for highlighting the low quality (and low in morality) ad running on Pakistan TV these days. I think, this is more to do with media agencies who produce ads based on some existing ideas in stead of research one matching with our own culture, norms and attitude.

Like, when we produce genuine TV dramas, all get hit and those which are based on western style or inspired by neighbor, we get flop serials.

We need to remain genuine and create things from our own thinking process.

Absolutely right! I ACTUALLY boycot products of irritating ads – especially those of irritating frequency variety like during cricket matches …

Yes, the Zong ad was irritating me too but the most irritating ad I ever had is the “Omung Lassi Ad”, it’s frequency & annoying ability both were too high, did you noticed?

You are absolutely right, but I believe adds are always irritating and our majority prefer to just switch over the channels at the time of commercial break. However, companies must think of making attractive adds to grab the attention of viewers, otherwise it is a useless activity. All three mentioned adds are really hopeless.
