About Lil Ole Me

Smiling JehanMy name is Jehan Ara. I am a person of average intelligence who can best be described as a pretty good human being, a communicator, an entrepreneur, a mild activist, a believer in the general goodness of people and an optimist.

I was born in Karachi but moved to Hong Kong as a child. It was in that vibrant and fast-moving city that I grew up. The kind of things that Hong Kong stamped on me were:

– a real appreciation for good food
– the importance of hard work, and
– the value of time (mine and everyone else’s)

If there is anything remotely angelic in my character, I owe it all to my mother who was the nicest, kindest and most beautiful human being on the face of this planet. She always wore a smile (even during the times when she was in pain due to the state of her health) and had a wonderful sense of humour. She had a kind word to say about everyone she met and her patience and compassion knew no bounds. We were lucky to have had a mother who taught us the basic lessons of love and sacrifice.

My father must be held responsible for teaching us the essential values of integrity, hard work, loyalty and commitment. Stories of his generosity and his hospitality have spread far and wide. Many a time I run into people in the course of my work who inform me that they have had the pleasure of staying at our home in Hong Kong. Should I tell them, I wonder, that the traffic through our apartment would put the traffic on our freeways to shame?

Amongst my vices, topmost is the pleasure I get in bestowing gifts on family and friends – this has earned for me the nickname “Santy Claus”.

What do I enjoy? I love to write, to talk, to read, to listen to music, to watch movies and go to the theatre whenever I get a chance. I love to travel – see new towns and cities, experience different cultures. I am a gadget freak and especially love everything “Apple”.

I am passionate about anything I undertake – whether it is the branding of P@SHA, the planning of an event, the development of a product, cooking a meal, counselling, working with younger people, or taking on a cause and pursuing it to the limits.

Amongst the things I fail to comprehend are the instincts in people to bring each other down, to be unhappy at the success of others, their inability to unite towards the achievement of a common cause and their selfishness in the pursuit of commercial or monetary gain.

Does this make me a social entrepreneur? I don’t know. I don’t like labels. All I know is that whatever I do, it needs to ignite in me a passion, an interest, a sense of achievement, of pleasure – a need that goes beyond mere monetary benefit.

Love the page layout!! I met Jehan in my third year at college (she was a final year student). The meeting was verrry interesting, but a separate story on its own. After an initial comic setback, we became the best of friends and have remained so ever since. At some point on this friendship path, we decided to become sisters and the bond has remained strong despite the miles or oceans separating us; when my cjhildren were born, she naturally beacme the godmother for both.

Jehan, you are a wonderful person, a true friend, a lovely human being and the best sister ever!!

It’s been a pleasure, a privilge and an experience working with her in various capacities. Being a newcomer to Pakistan, there were many dissapointments, but people like Jehan renew my hope. I like the way you have described yourself and your background here in a very casual funky manner which gives an image of the sweet bright girl next door. I think the idea should be to expanding rather than limiting our vision. The idea should be to look out rather waiting for people to approach an organization (like yours). I am sure that there are a countless folks who wander off into nothingness right beneath our noses.

I personally think (and i can be wrong here) the organizational structure follows ‘occupation’ strictly, where by grouping takes over ‘teaming’ and that in turn clogs the flow of something innovative.

Those are just thoughts from a troubled head that is expanding, in one way or the other (and your write up had me tearing emotions :p/just a joke/).

On a personal note, I appreciate the vision you have and you as a person.

    Hey Jahanara;

I accidently stumbled upon your website and was glad to find about your exciting blog space. Well, the reason that I am writing this post is to seek your guidance in communicating and assisting the I.T. industry of Pakistan.

I am an employee with the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan, Government of Pakistan and am assigned with the newly established Services Export Development Cell. I am an MBA by qualification, a brand strategist by passion and a trade marketeer by profession. TDAP is now seriously looking into developing and promoting the services exports of Pakistan.

In this vein, we would like to meet the stakeholders of the I.T. sector. If you can kindly suggest the names of the people who we should meet to get a wholistic view of the industry, its problems, its challenges, and obviously how it wants the government to help it out.

    Hello,

Hi Im Ahad a Flash Platform Evangelist, and *Ruby on Rails Developer from Karachi Pak.

Would you help me promote the Rails Development Stack here in Pakistan? Heres how you can do that:

    1. Post a screencast on your blog.
    2. Find out where you could help me post screencasts (CIO, other blogs etc etc)

I believe in Rails (Twitter is based on Rails) and its an amazing development environment, all being controlled by the Command Prompt. Thus you can even add users to your database via the command line.

If you could help me promote it that would be great indeed (being that you are GENUINELY interested in the growth of Pakistan and its people)

Two other points here off the topic but related to your post.:

    1. We need to understand the fundamental concepts before heading into the meat. I.E. – if you cant design CSS based layouts how can you succesfully use Javascript or JS based Frameworks (SproutCore, *Merb, etc etc)

    2. People with a small minded and selfish approach DO NOT:

    – Spend the time to learn the job well.
    – Never gain the deep statisfaction of doing the job really well.
    – Never give anything back.

There is a huge talent here, but its about refining that talent and doing it the right way. After all skills are cultivated over years and not months.

    Regards,

    Ahad Bokhari

One thing we share in common is Gadgets! but i go for reading about it in any new invention and find its implications!

    And one of my inspiration in life is to meet people whom what they are, the courage they carry, and want to know what inspires them in life and what drives them among all odds. Would like to meet you some time! and learn more;

I have read many biographies in my early studying days, one thing i found common is focus and commitment towards whatever that inspired people. Thomas Addison after thousands of failed attempts became successful to invent Bulb. Lucky to read so many books and had the moment to analyze. On a different note want to do something about coming generations, What I sense in our society / Pakistan everything is competition, starting from primary studies, one kid never realizes until he/she meets the people abroad and finds there are other things in life better then competition. I try my level best to open up minds of students whom i meet and get inspiration from people like yourself and many figures like Dr. Ata ur Rehman, Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, Akio Morita (SONY) my Father Zameer Mirza Rizki Famous Architect, my father inlaw Abul Khair Kashfi, Quad-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah. and many more!! Perhaps i suggest to start a topic to read about whom and if you could share few more names to read.

    hello,

Been a keen follower for a number of months but this is only the first time i’ve actually posted here.. goes without saying that you’re doing a brilliant job!

Having been really interested in the market on mobile initiatives in Pakistan recently i thought i’d check to see if anybody else has more information on an upcoming (presumably) solution by MCB Bank.. Haven’t been able to get my hands on the solution, but the URL is http://www.mcb.com.pk/mcbmobile/

Anybody else here know more about this? I really like the website though (and the ‘app’ that springs up if you click Login).

    Dear Jehan

A lot is happening around the world in the use of IT (es), and many organizations are running operations better than yesterday and also turning to make money out IT & ITes, where does Pakistan stands in that arena, i.e. i read the report by PASHA, but i am still interested to know more about Pakistan potentials. I think someone should make a big map of Pakistan with pointing statistics about the IT (es) companies and effective use of IT(ES) across the nation. There should be discussion about the burning issues with suggestions coming in.

Feels like we are not even good followers, however when there is success every one praises that is good but no one discusses the failures & their remedies where those people should go and check with whom, how they can do things correctly. I mean i see local companies spending billions of funds in buying solutions from abroad, that money is siphoned out of the country. We can make better and cheaper solutions in Pakistan.

For the start I think lots of people trust you, i suggest you should make an private independent board or an NGO, God knows where the funds will come, but should have paid committed people in the advisory and consultancy for all aspects of IT & ITes industry. board can even have some support from abroad Pakistan should protect its interest by not letting others take the hard earned money by people. Local companies will come itself for advisory and Organizations can take real advantage from this board and board can suggest plan and help in deployments.

I think idea can be refined and discussed in detail to make it workable. Or some initiative of this sort to protect the Pakistan’s Interest!

I am not being critic, since have spent so much time in the Industry that i regularly see repetitive mistakes all the time by same situation; most of the occasion money, time and talent is wasted. Time is perished mistakes needs to be corrected.

    Best Wishes

After a long time, I have come to conclusion that after careful consideration, IT people including stake holders should pool in to a website their ‘problems’ and ‘solutions’ anonymously, many can benefit from this and it should be published on TV channels. The website should be such that whoever contributes should be able to privately authenticated, and then anonymously published on the web.

I understand many profit making businesses will not like this idea as eventually it effect’s their annual budgets and many unfocused profit making companies will be closed. Why spend so much does not make sense we can use that money where it is more needed like saving water making dams. Technology will flourish and new things will keep coming, but water and other resources will be perished.

At present Pakistan has two windows one is the age group for utilizing resources, the other is Pak rupees parity against other countries. Later is not for long, but earlier is to be utilized within few years.

I strongly feel the future of Pakistani kids on street and less previlaged is in real dark and they cover 80% of our population and our kids will be abroad. We need to create atleast a spark, the tipoff will come itself!

    Wishes and prayers

I think I’m the first Indian who is responding in your blog. It is nonetheless true that LOVE is natural to all Human Being while contrary to that is a superimposition on the soul. Since no other creature has been betowed with the urge to change or to be better. No evolution for them hence no salvation is envisaged. Whereas it’s a privilege of human being to attain greatness through his pure thoughts, words and action. In Sanskrit it is elucidated very aptly that “Karmna Gahno Gatihi” meaning each Action has immense potentials.

Your thoughts, words and action, in fact come back to you in equal measures as they are thrown into the firmament. There are only 2 types of actions. Either in the form of LOVE and Hate. Each action of a mother towards a child is love even when she spanks the child.

Lets LOVE all including the enemy, so the BUDDHA said.
